Union Cabinet clears ₹8,970-crore four-lane Guwahati–Tezpur corridor

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a 135.87 km four-lane, access-controlled corridor on National Highway-15 between Baihata Chariali, near Guwahati, and Tezpur. The project is costed at ₹8,970.20 crore and will be built on a build-operate-transfer toll model.

What gets built

  • Five bypasses — at Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli and Tezpur — taking through traffic out of the built-up stretches
  • 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers and 46 underpasses
  • An elephant underpass on the Tezpur bypass for wildlife movement
  • A 4.9 km emergency landing facility on the Tezpur bypass, finalised with the Indian Air Force

The government expects average travel speeds to roughly double and travel time on the stretch to halve. The Mangaldoi bypass, 15.11 km, is excluded from this package.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma linked the approval to other work in the state: “These are not standalone investments. They are part of a clear national vision to build a world-class infrastructure network across Assam.”
